The Functional and Modern Kitchen: The Flynn’s Story

Sometimes when people come to our showroom in North Greenbush, NY, they like to ask about the projects we’ve finished at CCW.  One that always seems to come to mind, and heart, involves the Flynns.

Now the Flynns, Barbara and John, came to us because they were interested in renovating their kitchen.  Not only were they hoping to modernize their favorite room, but also make it functional for Barbara to move around and cook in her wheelchair.  As any self-respecting kitchen designer would know, it’s important for you to get to know your clients and learn the role the kitchen plays in their lives.  So Ray and I went to their home to learn more about the couple.  They had lived and traveled around the world and always shared a passion for cooking.  While visiting, Ray noticed that it was difficult for Barbara to reach certain elements of the room like the countertop and sink.  She also didn’t have room for her wheelchair under the cook-top.  Being Ray, highly detailed oriented, he returned to the showroom and began drawing sketches and renderings.

It was then determined that 25” was the perfect work surface height for Barbara to be able to comfortably stir and chop.  That pretty much meant the principal workstation could not sit on top of a cabinet, so we decided on a center island. The only challenge was that is also where the family enjoys gathering for light meals. Our solution was to create a dual height island maintaining a comfortable eating height while at the same time accommodating the custom 25” workstation.

We then added one of my favorite features!  With Barbara needing room to get her wheelchair under the cook-top, an adjustable height cook-top seemed to be the perfect solution.  Ray rigged it with a simple lift mechanism, the cook-top can go up and down to allow Barbara to wheel her chair underneath and have access to all the burners.  A safety hinge was also installed to immediately stop the lift mechanism should it ever get too low and touch Barbara’s legs.

As for the rest of the kitchen, dozens of little details ended up making the kitchen work.  Barbara and John came back to the showroom to finalize the selection of the tiles for the flooring and backsplash. We selected some really chunky and fun cabinet and drawer handles that are easy for Barbara to manipulate. We shopped around until we found the perfect sink that was large enough for a soup pot but shallow enough so Barbara has easy access. The door to the Lazy-Suzan cabinet for pots and pans was designed to fold away inside the cabinet, making it easy for Barbara to maneuver around and gain easy access to the contents.

After the completion of any project, I like to check in and see how customers are enjoying their renovated rooms. Today, Barbara and John are very much in love with their kitchen.  They now have the opportunity to cook gourmet meals once again.  Ray, you definitely did an astounding job for creating this special space!

Saratoga Showcase of Homes

So this past weekend, the Saratoga Builders Association presented their 15th Annual Showcase of Homes.  This was CCW’s first time being a part of the showcase as we teamed up with BCI Construction to design the master bath in Natalie’s house.  For those of you who are not familiar with the Showcase of Homes, the event celebrates the Capitol Region’s finest builders and allows people the opportunity to tour the finished homes. It’s a great way to check out design ideas and possible contractors for renovations you may be considering.  Also, if you’re in the market to buy, each home is up for sale.

Brookhaven Vista Cherry with a Bistro Stain

The Elms was the home we worked on.  Although we didn’t design the house, we did assist with the master bathroom. Unlike many of the master baths in other entry homes, ours was smaller in size. After careful consideration to detail, measurements and renderings, we were able to design the master bath Natalie had envisioned.  For the final product, the cabinetry used in the home was Brookhaven Vista Cherry with a Bistro Stain. The finish was selected because it blended well with the furniture in the adjoining master bedroom.

As part of the showcase, Chef’s Night took place last Friday to give people the chance to explore the homes, see designs and taste the delicious foods cooked by chefs in the Capitol Region.  As people jumped from home to home, everyone had great things to say about The Elms, especially the master bath.  Natalie’s interior decorations and design ideas definitely paid off.

The night before was the awards banquet and BCI was recognized for 6 awards!  Our master bath didn’t win, but we were against competition that had larger scaled rooms.  All in all, I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with BCI and am happy that the night ended on a positive note.

And special thanks to my old classmate Steve Van Zandt for being a wonderful comedian during the awards banquet.  I had heard he would be entertaining everyone for Thursday’s event and told him I would be attending.  Well, who knew that when it came to announcing the awards for best kitchen that he would bring up my name?  I can remember what he said, “Thinking about kitchens, my old friend Laura Naughton is in the audience.  She works over at Columbia CabinetWorks. Stand up Laura.” After standing upon his request, he then concluded, “And she promised me 50% off cabinetry!” Steve Van Zandt, you haven’t changed.

Why Your Kitchen is the “Heart of Your Home”

“Ponder well on this point: the pleasant hours of our life are all connected by a more or less tangible link, with some memory of the table.”
— Charles Pierre Monselet (1874)

As the “heart of the home,” your kitchen plays an important role in the lives of your family.  It’s a gathering place where families come together to laugh, talk and create memories for a lifetime.  The kitchen is also a welcoming room for people to enjoy afternoon gossip or get that borrowed cup of sugar.  As the center of your home, it’s constantly being traveled by those who grab a quick snack, plan to cook or work on school projects. For all these reasons, it is important that home owners take proper care of their kitchen.

Like people keep active and healthy for their own heart, shouldn’t you keep the “heart of your home” in tip-top shape?  At CCW we pride ourselves in kitchen renovations.  When your kitchen is in need of repairs and updates, we will be there as part of your team from early planning through the installation of the final drawer pull.

When customers begin considering a kitchen makeover, the first thing on their mind is the cost.  Kitchen renovations can be a very big deal. As designers, we understand that customers have a budget. People want to be able to have a space that makes them happy without breaking the bank. Yes, kitchens can be the most expensive renovations one will consider for their home, but they easily boost your home’s value, beauty and comfort.

So what is that heart of your home worth? On average, a kitchen should represent approximately 10% of the value of your home.  For example, let’s say your home is worth $500,000.  Your starting number should be around $50,000 (or 10%).  This figure is going to be the basis for what you spend on the 3 major components; cabinetry, countertop and appliances. Any specified features and the quality of the products you choose ultimately determine the cost. Also, additional elements such as flooring, backsplash, lighting, venting, windows, other construction, plumbing and electrical will increase the final amount.

Here at CCW, we consistently work with the customer’s budget to design their ideal kitchen.  We guide customers through style options, design layouts and features that will enhance the quality and feel within their home.  Every detail will be covered until satisfied.

So next time you’re in the “heart of your home,” consider the role it plays in your life and how you should be taking care of it.
