Designing a Rustic and Timeless Kitchen

Recently, we completed a full renovation of a kitchen in Long Island.  The owners had purchased a property and hired an architect to remodel the entire home.  They decided to also consult a kitchen designer to help create the look they wanted within their kitchen. So when CCW’s designer, Amy, visited the home for a measurement, she agreed that the 1960s style kitchen needed an update. The picture below is proof that the space still had its original laminate cabinetry and tile floor.

The family hoped for a kitchen that would be timeless, yet have a rustic appeal. To create the desired look, Brookhaven maple and oak cabinetry were mixed in throughout the space. In addition, the cabinetry above the countertop would have glass doors for an antique look.  Amy also mixed the countertop within the kitchen. The island top is carrara marble to accent the white cabinetry, and Caesarstone’s concrete was added along the perimeter to accent the grey island. The original space made the kitchen feel tight and confined, so a wall was knocked down to create an open floor plan for the neighboring living room. Lastly, the family wanted a space to eat so a banquette was designed with panels that would bring the same style and material to the eat-in-kitchen.

This project was such fun from beginning to end. Amy you did an excellent job mixing textures, colors and cabinetry throughout this beautiful kitchen!

Investing In Your Home’s Cabinetry

Last week, YNN-Albany interviewed our very own chief cabinet officer, Evan Levey, to discuss why homeowners should invest in their cabinetry.  As we all know, the kitchen and the bathroom are the two most popular rooms in the home.  These are also rooms that can easily persuade buyers to make an offer.  In the interview, Evan provided some excellent suggestions for homeowners to consider when renovating and installing cabinets.

One of the first ideas Evan suggested was a growing trend to hide kitchen appliances beneath panels. These panels would match the installed kitchen cabinets and create a modern feel within the space. Evan also discussed that when beginning a kitchen renovation, you should plan to spend 10% of the value of your home or the value you want your home to be. By finding the actual or anticipated value of your home, designers can better work within your budget to achieve a successful renovation.  Lastly, Evan focused on why Wood-Mode is a great cabinet brand that does not effect the environment by clear cutting forests. Redesigning the Parlor Room for the Vanguard Showhouse

Last week, the Vanguard Showhouse finally opened its doors to the public. As I walked through the newly renovated rooms, I was amazed by the transformation that had taken place within this historic home.  In October 2010, Anna and I visited the showhouse for the first time.  I remember walking into the parlor, and seeing how desperate this room was for an upgrade.  Below, you can see how the parlor looked before the renovations began.

For this renovation, we were teamed with Blairhouse Interiors Group, an interior design firm in Latham, NY. Our role was to design cabinetry within the parlor. After measurements and designs were drawn, we were inspired to create a Chippendale piece to match the interior around the home.  And of course, the cabinets would be made within the Wood-Mode family, Brookhaven.

Finally, after months of designing and working with our installation team, the room was completed.  The cabinets were designed to maximize storage and act as a media console for the home.  Also, glass doors were installed to showcase possessions and to bring a sense of comfort to the room.  Along with Blairhouse Interiors decorating expertise, the room is not only modern, but also a space you will never want to leave.

Working with the Vanguard Showhouse was an amazing experience for CCW and one I will never forget.  Being involved with the project allowed us to work with so many wonderful people, including Nate, the owner of the home. As I look back through all of the planning that went into the renovation, I am proud to be a designer.  The home is absolutely beautiful and is a place I wish I could live in forever!
