Texture is everything and can play a vital role in how you layer the look and feel of a space in your home. Just remember that moderation is key. Knowing where to start is important, but so is knowing when to stop.

Decide a Look

Do you want a cozy look and feel? Then select woods, plush fabrics, woven surfaces and natural fabrics for the floors and surfaces to add texture to a room. However if a streamlined look is what you want, then introduce lacquer, plastics, metals and glass. Just remember that balance is key. The best rooms have a perfect mix of both.

Introduce Nature

Thick, twisty tree branch and vase filled with freshly cut winding twigs.

Nature can play an interesting role in the home. It’s the perfect place to draw inspiration. Try using shells, stones, horns, feathers, and the unexpected, like cotton blossoms and birch branches, as decorative objects.

Make it an Accent

3 Colors for 2013

The year is fresh and new, so you are probably considering ideas on how to update your home. In addition to renovating your kitchen or bathroom, color is a simple way to revive a space and add personality. Explore these three colors designers are excited about in 2013.

Olive

Relaxing yet bold enough to make a statement, olive is the perfect shade of green that can be used in any room. The color pairs well with cream and brown tones. We personally enjoy this color for the living room accented with brown leather furniture.

Create a welcoming escape in any nook with this pink hue. The color is perfect for the foyer or even in a dining area. Rose goes well with a variety of colors creating a lush and rich feel. Incorporate the color in spaces where guests will gather due to its inviting nature.

Charcoal

The grey family may have some of our favorite tones. When you use colors like charcoal in the home, you can juxtapose your most eclectic pieces in style and color. Accent colors can be a breath of fresh air in rooms of neutral colors, so get creative. Bring in pieces that will pop, such as a red sofa, bright tufted benches or funky art.

Color of 2013: Emerald

 

As most of you may recall, Pantone chooses a color that will represent each year. Last year Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, provided the energy boost we needed to recharge and move forward. In 2013, enhance your sense of well-being by inspiring insight as well as promoting balance and harmony. Emerald, a vivid verdant green, is the official color for the new year.

Often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. This magnificent hue has been the color of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. Also the color of growth, renewal and prosperity, no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.

Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful tone translates easily within home interiors. Add this vibrant hue throughout your home as a soothing pop of color. Pillows, wallpaper prints, dishes in the kitchen and decorative boxes are just a few design ideas for the home. The color also pairs well with browns, darker greys, neutrals and jewel tones, including cobalt blue and magenta.

Spring Cleaning Tips

With the new season beginning, it’s time to think about spring cleaning. This is a great opportunity to start getting your home in order by cleaning it top to bottom. I believe in a clean home not only for the obvious reasons but for the fact that it supports an organized and healthy lifestyle for your family.

Declutter

Before you begin, be sure to get rid of the garbage and extraneous clutter before cleaning. Purge, purge, purge. If you haven’t used something in over a year, you probably never will. Throw away or donate to charity.

Tackle One Room at a Time

You may be excited to get started cleaning, but be careful not to get distracted with too many projects in your home at once. It’s important to clean one room at time. By doing so, you’ll see the difference immediately!

Clean Windows

For me, clean windows are essential! They provide beautiful sunlight in and allow everything to be seen more clearly. After being shut up inside for months, it is so refreshing to open the windows and have fresh air flowing through the house. I like to to have scented candles lit as I go through my list of chores.

Clean Corners

By cleaning the nooks and crannies in your rooms, you’ll have an instant change. You’ll see the changes as you dust the corners of the ceiling and vacuum the edges of the room. It’ll make the space feel brighter and bigger.

Check Your AC

As spring begins, be sure to prep for warm weather. It’s important to change your home’s air filters and have the AC cleaned and serviced to use in the hot summer months.

Clean the Gutters

After the leaves fall in autumn, make sure you clean your gutters of debris that has gathered inside the gutters, eave troughs, downspouts and drainpipes. This will keep those April showers from damaging your home and provide a smooth flow through the gutter’s route runoff.

As most of you may know, Pantone Color Institute selects a color that will be symbolic for the new year. You may be familiar with last year’s color, Honeysuckle, which inspired people to be cheerful and optimistic. For 2012, we’re ready for a burst of energy with Tangerine Tango. Tangerine Tango is a spirited reddish-orange that is exotic and has a lot of depth. It is sophisticated and delivers a sense of dramatization and seductiveness. The color has taken its time to grow in popularity, but I think you’ll love the explosively loud and exceedingly bold statement it can make in a room.

For home interiors, Tangerine Tango adds an unexpected pop of color. As a versatile choice for any room, the orangey hue complements a spectrum of colors including yellow, purple, blue and green. Saving Energy Around the Home

Save money and make a difference by taking part in these simple actions throughout the home:

• Make sure your water heater is set to 120 degrees. Some thermostats are preset to 140 degrees, which can cost you more money.
• Wash your clothes in cold water and use the short cycle.
• Move your refrigerator away from the stove, dishwasher, or heat vents. Make sure the door seals are airtight.
• Schedule an annual tune-up for your central air conditioner, heat pump, or furnace.
• Install water-saving shower heads that spray 2.2 to 2.5 gallons per minute, rather than 3.5 to 5.5 gpm.
• Convert your household light bulbs to LED.
• Purchase a filter for the kitchen faucet and cut back on water bottle usage.
• Match the water level and temperature settings on your washer to the size of your load. Don’t fill the machine for just a few items.
• Clean your dryer lint filter before you put in a new load.
• Use pots that fit the size of the burners on your stove. Use lids so you can cook at a lower temperature.
• Turn the lights off when you leave a room.
