Redesigning the Parlor Room for the Vanguard Showhouse

Last week, the Vanguard Showhouse finally opened its doors to the public. As I walked through the newly renovated rooms, I was amazed by the transformation that had taken place within this historic home.  In October 2010, Anna and I visited the showhouse for the first time.  I remember walking into the parlor, and seeing how desperate this room was for an upgrade.  Below, you can see how the parlor looked before the renovations began.

For this renovation, we were teamed with Blairhouse Interiors Group, an interior design firm in Latham, NY. Our role was to design cabinetry within the parlor. After measurements and designs were drawn, we were inspired to create a Chippendale piece to match the interior around the home.  And of course, the cabinets would be made within the Wood-Mode family, Brookhaven.

Finally, after months of designing and working with our installation team, the room was completed.  The cabinets were designed to maximize storage and act as a media console for the home.  Also, glass doors were installed to showcase possessions and to bring a sense of comfort to the room.  Along with Blairhouse Interiors decorating expertise, the room is not only modern, but also a space you will never want to leave.

Working with the Vanguard Showhouse was an amazing experience for CCW and one I will never forget.  Being involved with the project allowed us to work with so many wonderful people, including Nate, the owner of the home. As I look back through all of the planning that went into the renovation, I am proud to be a designer.  The home is absolutely beautiful and is a place I wish I could live in forever!

Hiring an Interior Designer

Over the years, I have seen many people walk through our showroom with questions regarding home renovations.  One of the biggest dilemmas for homeowners is whether or not to hire a designer.  My advice is unless you have some professional training, go with the expert. There are so many benefits that will improve the process and the finished result.

“A designer acts as a middle man…”

See, designers are experienced experts in their fields and have an eye for beauty and functionality.  Designers take the time to listen to what the customer wants and will create a customized space that is unique – I don’t know any designer who has created identical rooms.  They’ll also explore other rooms in the home to design a style and aesthetic that will provide continuity and flow.

As the renovation begins, it can be overwhelming for the homeowner to schedule times to meet with contractors, vendors and the delivery team.  A designer acts as a middle man and can coordinate these important aspects throughout the project.  Also, designers have access to the best prices available from vendors on countertops, sinks, faucets, tiles, and, of course, cabinetry.  They’ll also offer quotes for comparison, which is great when you’re working on a budget.

When the renovation is completed, you’ll have the satisfaction knowing that the kitchen, bathroom or other area of your home has been professionally done.  Unlike  store-bought-designs that can deteriorate in quality and style,  customized rooms have a timeless look and are built to last for years.
